A Short Story: Get Haunted by Aprilynne Pike

Once again, Saundra Mitchell has picked a wonderful author as part of her Trick or Treat Challenge, none other than the author of Wings, Aprilynne Pike.

Now you know how much we MMs love Aprilynne and this confession on her blog made me giggle because, well this is so her and yet another reason why we enjoy her writing -

"I was asked by my lovely friend, Saundra Mitchell, to do a write-up about a brush with the supernatural. Problem is, I've never had one!! So being the dirty, rotten liar that I am, I decided to write the ghost story I wish had happened to me. It's a bunch of lies mixed up with a bunch of truth, and I really had fun writing it!"

And here's a little teaser from it -

I looked up at the old house—three full stories of it—and felt a thrill of excitement jolt through me. And perhaps a touch of fear. I was twelve, and it was the first time I was going to have my own room. After the birth of my little sister three years earlier, there had been three of us girls in one room. I couldn’t even remember sleeping on anything except a bunk bed. The bedroom I’d been lucky enough to get in the new house was up in the third floor attic and I was prepared to find gold pieces hidden in the rafters, heirlooms in the floorboards, old diaries in secret compartments in the walls!

But apparently I’d been reading too much. When I got to my room it had clearly been entirely re-modeled with white walls, beige carpet and not a rafter in sight. But at least it had a great view. So with all my familiar things moved into my room, I opened my window to catch the breeze, and tucked myself into bed. (The bottom half of a bunk bed, of course.)

It was well-past midnight when I awoke to someone crying. Since I had a new baby brother, I figured it was him and wondered why I could hear him way up here—his and my parents’ bedrooms were on the first floor. I tucked my pillow over my ears, and tried to go back to sleep, but the crying started to sound like it was right outside my door. Finally I had to get up and see what was wrong. May as well, wasn’t getting any sleep anyway. I opened my door and peeked out into the hallway and with a gasp, threw myself back against the wall.

There was a woman out there. Sitting on a rocking chair I’d never seen.

You can read the rest of the story on Saundra's blog here. Aprilynne, in the post below, also reviewed Pam Bachorz' CANDOR. See were not the only ones who fell in love with this dystopian story. Check out Aprilynne's review and our CANDOR forum.

Boxed Set of The Mortal Instruments

Just a reminder *glances at image on the left and smiles* that the boxed set of The Mortal Instruments is now out.

I saw it at Costco and Sam's Club. Not to mention Barnes and Noble and Borders.

Put it on your Holiday List now. I think every friend would love their own set. No matter what winter holiday they celebrate.

As for me, I think Santa could squeeze one of these in my stocking.
