Author Interview with Kimberly Derting, Author Of The Body Finder

I am very excited to post our interview with Kimberly. The Body Finder has received raved reviews, and I finally received my copy, which I'm reading next!! We were honored to be on The Body Finder's Street team. We have a special treat for you guys at the end of our interview with Kimberly.

What was your inspiration in writing The Body Finder?

Oh boy, here we go….my husband’s favorite question! My husband will jokingly say that he is “the wind beneath my wings” or “my muse” because he was the one who said: “What if there was someone who could find dead bodies?” Of course, what he conveniently forgets is that his idea was for a middle-grade boy adventure! :)

LOL. I love your answer. Way to go to your hubby! What kind of research did you do for The Body Finder?

I actually did interview a couple of friends who have decades of experience in all things police, fire, and rescue. They were SO incredibly helpful! When I interviewed them separately, they both immediately switched into this super-professional mode which was a side of them I’d never seen before. Up until then, I had only seen their super-hilarious-smartass mode!

Did you find it hard to get into the killer's mind in writing his pov?

I SO wish that it was hard to write from the killer’s POV because then I wouldn’t feel like such a freak. But, really, it was easy…and I loved it! I’m not quite sure what that says about me!

I think that says you knew your character very well. What can you tell us about the echoes? How are they formed?

Every murder victim has a unique echo that in no way reflects who they were or how they lived. Only the victims that are not laid to rest properly call out to Violet to be found. Violet can still sense those who are resting peacefully, although their echoes are more faded, like static.

What else can you tell us about Vi and Jay that we didn't learn about them in The Body Finder?

I can’t give away all of their secrets! :) I will say that you will see their relationship evolve in Desires of the Dead. Okay, I’ve probably said too much!

We can't wait to read it!! Desires of the Dead is next in the series, will there be any more books after that?

I really hope so, because I would love to write more! *crosses fingers tightly* :)

We're looking forward to future releases from you! Did you listen to music as you wrote? If so, do you have a playlist you can share with us?

I’ve never written with music…unless you count my son’s music blaring from the other room. I do use music when I’m feeling a little stuck. Usually I hop in my car and drive with the stereo blasting until I feel un-stuck. But it doesn’t have to by any particular music…in fact, one time the only CD in my car was my daughter’s Jonas Brothers CD. And I hate to admit it, but it worked. A little Jo-Bros can go a long way ;)

That's good to know about the Jo-Bros. What books do you have sitting on your night stand that you would recommend to us?

I’m currently reading Some Kind of Normal by Heidi Willis! While it’s not YA, I'm really, really loving it!!

We're going to be checking that book out. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us Kimberly!

  1. Great interview!! I love her DH teasing her. My DH has given me several ideas, none of which will become noels for that very reason :) That, and they are pretty bad!!

  2. Great interview! Her hubby sounds like mine! I come up with an idea and when I get stuck, he's my "what if" guy.

I can't wait to read this book. Sounds so cool!
