3 stars- It was a good read

It's a question as old as time itself: WHICH IS BETTER, THE ZOMBIE OR THE UNICORN?
Get ready for the battle of the century as two feuding teams use short stories to settle their controversy. You'll see zombies and unicorns as you've never seen them before: the good, the evil- the really, really bada**. Are you on Team Zombie or Team Unicorn? (taken from the ARC's back cover)

Let the debate begin! With a collection of 12 short stories, from 12 different authors, I'm sure this is one debate that will continue on for some time. Zombies vs Unicorns gives fans 12 stories, with every other story alternating from the Zombie Team and the Unicorn Team. Readers will enjoy short stories from Cassandra Clare, Carrie Ryan, Diana Peterfreund, Meg Cabot, Libby Bray, Maureen Johnson, Scott Westerfeld and more. The debate gets even wittier as Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier's dialogue before each story is comical and one I think fans will really enjoy enjoy reading. With such a great mix of authors and stories, I found that I really enjoyed a couple of the stories, others I liked and some I didn't really care for. Which is not out of the norm for me when I'm reading a large collection of short stories.

Here's the teams-
Team Unicorn: edited by Holly Black: Meg Cabot, Kathleen Duey, Margo Lanaga, Garth Nix, Naomi Novik, and Diana Peterfreund.

Team Zombie: edited by Justine Larbalestier: Libba Bray, Cassandra Clare, Carrie Ryan, Scott Westerfeld, Maureen Johnson and Alaya Dawn Johnson.

Before I read this, I thought I would be more of a Team Unicorn fan, but my favorite stories are Bougainvillea by Carrie Ryan and Cold Hands by Cassandra Clare. So I guess if they're team Zombie, that would make me team Zombie, right!?! Really I've not been on either team, as I'm team werewolf. Hmmm, I wonder if a werewolf could defeat a Zombie or a Unicorn..... Having said that, my favorite Unicorn story is The Care and Feeding of Your Baby Killer Unicorn by Diana Peterfreund.

Zombies vs Unicorns has a large mix of diversity in each of the short stories, which either have a seriousness to them or are humorous. Like Meg Cabot's Unicorn story, Princess Prettypants, which is the name of the rainbow farting unicorn a 17 year old receives for her birthday. There's humor, romance, gore, and adventure mixed together to fuel the great debate, Zombies or Unicorns and who would win.

If you're on "team in the middle", by the time you finish reading this book, I feel you'll have picked a side. With a great mix of YA authors, you'll find yourself persuaded to be on either Team Zombie or Team Unicorn. Even if you've picked a team, you might find yourself trading sides after you read Zombies vs Unicorns. I do want to throw some caution out, that this was written for teens, and some of the stories do contain maturer content.

I have to ask, what team are you on?

  1. Okay, this sounds like a must have. I adore unicorns...but Carrie made me like zombies or at least "get them". LOL. Now that Cassie's written a story about zombies -- well that makes it a Must Read!

  2. Considering I love Carrie Ryan and Cassandra Clare, I am going to have to guess I will be team zombie!

  3. Well...I, like you used to, lean towards unicorns. I like pretty things so there you go. However, looking at the authors, I am thinking I prefer the zombie writers slightly more so I will have to read the book & see what team I am really on!
