Thoughtful Thursday- Autism Speaks

April is Autism Awareness Month! With 1 in 110 Children, and 1 in 70 Boys being diagnosed with Autism, we wanted to spotlight a wonderful organization that helps bring awareness to Autism.

What is Autism?

Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). The other pervasive developmental disorders are PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not
Otherwise Specified), Asperger's Syndrome, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Many parents and professionals refer to this group as Autism Spectrum Disorders. (from Autism Speaks site)

Autism Speaks's Mission is:

At Autism Speaks, our goal is to change the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders.

We are dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society; and to bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder. We are committed to raising the funds necessary to support these goals.

Autism Speaks aims to bring the autism community together as one strong voice to urge the government and private sector to listen to our concerns and take action to address this urgent global health crisis. It is our firm belief that, working together, we will find the missing pieces of the puzzle.

Autism Speaks. It's time to listen.

You'll find links like, What is Autism, What Causes Autism, How Common Is Autism, under their Be Informed Link. They are also a great support to those whose children have just been diagnosed with Autism, with links for Your Child's Right, and Autism and Your Child.

Autism Speaks is a wonderful community full of support for parents and family members who's children have been diagnosed with Autism.

Be sure to visit their site to find out all the ways we can help support the cause, learn more about the treatments, and donate.
Right now, they will match every $ donated! https://secure.autismspeaks.org/page/contribute/donate1
