3 stars- A Good Read

Owen, Frank, Audrey, and Jin-Ae have one thing in common: they all want to die. When they meet online after each attempts suicide and fails, the four teens make a deadly pact: they will escape together on a summer road trip to visit the sites of celebrity suicides...and at their final destination, they will all end their lives. As they drive cross-country, bonding over their dark impulses, sharing their deepest secrets and desires, living it up, hooking up, and becoming true friends, each must decide whether life is worth living--or if there's no turning back (quoted from Goodreads).

I wasn't sure what to except when I started Crash Into Me, but it was way different than I expected it to be. I found myself relating on some level with the characters and I found myself drawn to each of the characters and their stories. Owen, Audrey, Jin-Ae and Frank make a suicide pact together. They will travel across the US, visiting grave sites of famous people who have committed suicide and also accomplish various things on their wish lists. It's during this trip that they all find what they've needed most in life, a sense of belonging.

I won't lie, my heart broke for each of the characters and what they've been through in their young teen years and at how lonely and lost they all felt. They all find each other on line and form their group, but it's not until their trip, do they really open up about their wants out of life, and they open up and talk about their fears and what they're running from. The book's main character Owen broke my heart the most. I can't imagine all he has gone through, but he gave me hope at watching his transformation during the trip. Each of the character offers something that everyone can relate to.

I liked the setting, as they travel across the country going and doing various things that each of them has only dreamed of. Though the interaction is across between their conversations on their trip and their IM's leading up to the trip, I felt it was enough to understand each of the characters. Normally I don't read books like this, as I get so depressed and emotionally invest in books that closely mirror that of reality, BUT, I feel they can deliver a powerful message to the reader. I know first hand what it's like to lose a friend to suicide and I think Albert Borris delivers an important message through Owen's story, that I couldn't stop reading the book.

Crash Into Me may not be easy for everyone to read, but I think it's a read that gets to the heart of a serious problem. Owen is from a town where 5 teens and 2 adults had committed suicide and while he's tried to commit suicide himself a few times, once he discovers more about himself, he realizes may have more to live for than what he originally thought. I really liked this quote that Owen was remembering that one of his counselors told him, "Real self worth comes from mastery, getting good at something. It doesn't matter what. Then you don't have to worry about empty compliments. You don't worry about what other people think. You have self-respect."

Recently we had the chance to sit down with Owen, the main character in Crash Into Me, to ask him a few questions about his story.

What was your family's reaction when you got back from your road trip?
I would like to say there were NO Lies…but that is a mistake. No lies for deception. My mom, dear sweet mommy dearest, she made a trip out to Novata, CA to the gravesites. I didn’t go with her. My brother went with her.

If you could tell Frank and Jin-Ae one thing each, openly and honestly, what would it be?
I would say to Frank that you just do not have to turn out like your father. Slowly and surely, I would say to him you just don’t gotta be an alcoholic. You just gotta be free. To Jin-ae, I would say you’ve got to be settled in your own skin before you can let the world know what you are thinking, whether it being a lesbian or not.

What's your favorite thing about Audrey?
I like that she sleeps with her mouth open, Audrey. Her curves. Her pink socks. Her Nirvana c.d. collection. But, I think my tattoo is the best one by far, Suicide is Confession. Like that one. Audrey gave that to one.

How has your life changed since the road trip?
I like that I am Trail-basis, Peer Leader. I am boyfriend of Maureen. Not Audrey. I am a Junior now, and I like it, especially, now that I am boyfriend of Maureen.

If you could take another "themed" type of road trip, what would it be?
Happy Trip. If I could take another “themed” road trip, what would it be? I would take trip to Niagara Falls, and then to Baltimore, MD, the harbor, and then I would go to Belize, and then I would go to the Hoover Dam, and then I would go back home. There’s no place like home, didn’t I hear that in some a kind of movie, someplace.
