There has been a lot of Irish slang floating around this summer. Whether it was from The Glee Project winner—and soon to be new Glee cast member—Damian McGinty, or debut author Leigh Fallon on her blog. Do you find yourself confused about all these new words that are being tossed into our lexicon? Have no fear! Leigh Fallon is here to give you a quick translation

Leigh writes: In Carrier of the Mark you’ll come across words that you may not recognize. Here’s the 411 on Irish English.

Plonker (plong-ker)
Definition: Complete idiot.
Use in Carrier of the Mark: “Mike! Look whachya did to me jumper. Yer a total plonker boy.”

Jumper (jum-per)
Definition: Sweater
Use in Carrier of the Mark: Ger’off me jumper, ya dozy git.

Git (g-eh)
Definition: Dick
Use in Carrier of the Mark: (see above)

Plank (pl-ank)
Definition: Boring idiot.
Use in Carrier of the Mark: He’s acting like a complete plank.

Pleb (Pl-eb)
Definition: Moron.
Use in Carrier of the Mark: That Seamus guys is such a pleb.

Ride (roy-id)
Definition: Gorgeous.
Use in Carrier of the Mark: Phewar, look atch’yer man, he’s a ride.

Take the piss (take de piss)
Definition: To make fun of
Use in Carrier of the Mark: Dat’s not even funny. Stop taken de piss.

Culchie (Cul-chee)
Definition: Country Bumpkin
Use in Carrier of the Mark: Look at de culchie, up from de bog for de day to de big shmoke.

Langer (leng-er)
Definition: Idiot (male).
Use in Carrier of the Mark: He’s make’n a complete langer of himself.

Get off with (ger’off w’eh)
Definition: Making out with
Use in Carrier of the Mark: She was gett’n off with yer man, ya know, de guy with de hair.

Gaf (g-af)
Definition: House
Use in Carrier of the Mark: Do ya wan’ta come back ta me gaf?

Toe-rag (toe-rag)
Definition: A nasty person (female)
Use in Carrier of the Mark: She’s a complete and utter toe-rag, I wan’ta throttle her.

Character Interview: Aine DeRise

In the debut novel Carrier of the Mark by Leigh Fallon, Megan Rosenberg finds herself mysteriously drawn to an elusive boy named Adam DeRise. The closer she becomes to Adam, the more she learns about herself and his two siblings, Aine and Rian. You don’t have to wait until the book comes out to learn more about the DeRise family. Áine, how does it feel being the only girl in a house three guys?

It’s all I’ve ever known, so I’ve had nothing really to compare it too. Fionn’s grand, I’ve got him around my little finger, and I know he loves giving into me. So in that sense it is fun being the only girl. It gives me privileges! LOL!! The other benefit of being the only girl is that all I have to do is mention the word period or cramps and everyone backs off. It’s hilarious, I use it so often that I’m sure their idea of how the female body worse is way twisted.

I guess if I thought about it I might think it sucked just little. I didn’t realize what I was missing out on in terms of girl company until Megan came along. It’s been super fun having another girl around, even if my brothers do tend to get all weird when she’s around. Adam of course is a goner, has been since he first laid eyes on her. And Rían… well you know Rían, he’s a funny fish at the best of times, but Megan brings out the uber weird in him.

What is your earliest memory of using your elemental power?

Oh my gosh! Let me see. Oohh that’s a toughie. My element is different to the lads because I’m tapped into all the time. I’m not even aware I’m using it half the time. I guess the first vivid memory of doing something that set me apart was one day at school I told my friends I could get the spiders to play with us. Nobody believed me, so I showed them. I got the spiders to march in single file up my arm over my head and down the other arm. All my friends thought it was pretty deadly until I got the spiders to do it to my friend head.

Cinema or DVD?

Cinema.

Popcorn or Chips?

By chips I’m assuming you mean crisps, we call them crisps in Ireland. Definitely crisps… Tayto cheese and onion. You guys in the US don’t know what you’re missing.

Sunbathing or Skiing?

Sunbathing.

Dream guy?

Oh my gosh! Such a hard one for me to answer (and def not a quick fire answer). I’m kinda into o different looking guys. Living with Adam, Rían, and Fionn has kinda made the gorgeous smoldering hot guy a bit ordinary. I always love to find the hot guy hidden behind a mask of assumed unattractiveness. With my element, I see so much beauty deep inside. Sometimes the most gorgeous guys are hidden behind the not so attractive masks.
