Book Review: Cascade (River of Time #2)

Published by David C Cook
Released on June 1st, 2011

5 stars- I LOVE this series
Purchase from: Amazon| Barnes & Noble

Mom touched my underdress—a gown made six hundred years before—and her eyes widened as she rubbed the raw silk between thumb and forefinger. She turned and touched Lia’s gown. “Where did you get these clothes?”

Gabi knows she’s left her heart in the fourteenth century and she persuades Lia to help her to return, even though they know doing so will risk their very lives. When they arrive, weeks have passed and all of Siena longs to celebrate the heroines who turned the tide in the battle against Florence—while the Florentines will go to great lengths to see them dead.

But Marcello patiently awaits, and Gabi must decide if she’s willing to leave her family behind for good in order to give her heart to him forever.

Suspense, twists, battles and an incredible romance that leaves me breathless, Cascade is a sequel that held me captive and in the end left me wanting so much more. There's much more humor, adventure and plenty of breathtaking moments between Gabi and Marcello that I absolutely love, and couldn't get enough of. I really fell in love with Waterfall, but Lisa T Bergren increased my love for this series even more with Cascade.

Gabi and Lia are such well developed characters, that it's hard not to fall in love with them. They have an inner strength I admire, they're courageous, brave, bold, beautiful and they can kick some serious knight butt. To match these two fabulous heroines are two equally strong, good looking guys, Marcello and Luca. I love how much these guys love and respect Gabi and Lia, and I thoroughly enjoyed the humor and jabs the girls dish out to Luca, which is of course all in good fun. One of the other characters I'm really torn with is the handsome Lord Greco. I love his character twist... is he good, is he bad? What's his intentions with Gabi? He kept me guessing until the very end and I'm still left wondering what his true motives are. I'm really intrigued with his character.

Cascade's flawlessly written plot line uncovers betrayal, a lot of twists, many battles and the beginning of an all out war in Italy. It's also a time when the plague starts to show it's ugly head. I was pleasantly surprised with some the character twists Lisa added into this story. Though I had some suspicions about some of the characters, I was shocked to learn about their ulterior motives and their role in the war that takes place. One of the shining stars through the war and even during her capture is Gabi. Her sarcasm and her strength really shined during these times. Both Gabi and Lia live up to their nic-names, She-Wolves.

Lisa's writing is fantastic. I love how she handles her time travel and how believable she makes it feel. As I mentioned in my review for Waterfall, she does a beautiful job and putting a modern day girl back in the early 14th century. She blends together the mannerisms, and language of both eras perfectly. It's not hard for me to get completely swept away in this series, especially when the story centers on characters who are so well written they feel real. If you haven't already, I highly recommend picking up this series! It's a clean cut read with empowering characters that both YA and adult readers will enjoy.

What do you do when your knight in shining armor lives, literally, in a different world? Most American teenagers want a vacation in Italy, but the Betarrini sisters have spent every summer of their lives among the romantic hills with their archaeologist parents. Stuck among the rubble of medieval castles in rural Tuscany on yet another hot, dusty archaeological site, Gabi and Lia are bored out of their minds … until Gabi places her hand atop a handprint in an ancient tomb and finds herself in fourteenth-century Italy. And worse yet, in the middle of a fierce battle between knights of two opposing forces. Suddenly Gabi’s summer in Italy is much, much more interesting.
