Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them. He's days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone's obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect--everyone except for Madison Montgomery.

Maddy's the one girl in Angel City who doesn't breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn't recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love.

Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson's scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi - and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels' wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat … and this time it's up to Maddy to save Jackson - quoted from Goodreads

Immortal City is definitely not your average angel book. Scott Speer does a fabulous job at creating a world unlike any I've read in YA angel lore. I loved the gritty feel this story has to it. Angels in this book can be hired out to protect humans, and these angels don't hide who they are. If you're one of the lucky Angels, you're chosen to be a Guardian, as in a Guardian Angel. The Angles in this book are a class of beings unlike any other, and in this world people can't get enough of them. They're celebrities. They're wealthy, beautiful, and in high demand. If you're Maddy, you could care less about them.

Maddy for me was a character I went back and forth on liking through out this story. I liked that she was completely secure in who she was and with what she had. Since her parents died when she was little, she's been raised by her Uncle who also own a popular diner where Maddy helps out before and after school. Not having a lot of money, Maddy's a character who's grateful for what she has and doesn't let not having the finer things in life get to her. One of the things that started to bug me about Maddy was the fact she kept pushing Jackson away through out the entire story, even after the fact she knows he likes her and she likes him. It made sense the first two times she does it given what's going during those scenes, some of their differences that forbids them to fall in love, and the way she feels about Angels, but when it kept happening it killed the flow of the story for me and started to really annoy me.

Luckily Jackson is a persistent character. I really enjoyed Jackson, because there's so much more to him than his drop dead gorgeous looks, being the "it" Angel and having money. He wasn't some shallow character. He had depth to him and I felt like his feelings and attraction to Maddy were genuine. Plus I loved that their relationship wasn't forced. Their attraction to each other and their chemistry made sense. I love that fell for someone who saw him for who he was, and didn't care about all the money and fame. While this story has some good romance and character chemistry, I loved the suspense, danger and the murder mystery that fueled my intrigue with this story.

Not everyone in this story cares about the Angels, and someone's out to kill the best of the best off. The suspense, the who done it part of the story surrounding who was responsible for killing the Angels and the danger that Jackson and Maddy found themselves apart of was well written. I had my hunches about who was responsible for the killings, but Scott kept throwing in some great twists that would leave me second guessing myself. I thought Scott did a great job with the pacing of his story. He kept me invested with the over all story, even though there were parts that I wasn't a huge fan of. Though one of the big mysteries is solved, I have a feeling there's a lot more twists and shocking revelations to come. With the abrupt way the story ended I hope there's going to be a sequel.

Over all Immortal City was a good, entertaining read and I'm looking forward to finding answers to my unanswered questions in the next book.

  1. Ooo, I'm glad you posted about this because I've had a copy of it for a while, but haven't picked it up yet. Now I definitely will soon, though! I was worried it'd be the run of the mill angel story, so it's good to hear it's refreshing. Thanks for the review!

    1. You're welcome DJ! I like what Scott did with his angel lore. It's different than most of the angel lore found in YA books, and it's a bit grittier, which I liked. I hope you enjoy it!
