Today's discussion is about: Chapter 11: Our Kind
  • For some reason Izzy to me is a character who has surprised me the most in this book. I feel like I've finally gotten to see more of the real her, and I totally love her character. I enjoyed the Izzy/Clary bonding moment that happens in this chapter when they're talking about their relationships. I also liked that she was the one that Clary called about the Demons, and told her where to meet her. Were you surprised that Clary turned to her for help? What did you think of their girl talk? I love that Izzy just says it how it is.
  • Camille... She makes a comment when the Shadowhunters come for her about them hating her kind, and in reading COFA this time around and I picked up on the fact that it seems she still very much as a grudge against the Shadowhunters. Did any of you pick up on that? Where you surprised that Camille said the only person she'd talk to was Magnus? Why do you think that is?

Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading COFA for the first time.

  1. *I Think Clary called on Izzy because for obvious reasons, she can't turn to Jace, and the place is supposed to be a church of some sort so she didn't call on Simon. Besides that, she knows how good of a Shadowhunter Izzy is. I do love their bonding moment though. I like to see the real Izzy not the tough chick shield that she keeps up all the time.

*I did notice more reading it this time. The raw emotion and hate she seems to feel stood out a lot more. As for why she wants to talk to Magnus, my lips are sealed on that one. I don't know what I thought when I read it the first time. I had read Clockwork Angel too so I don't think I can answer this one.

  2. I love the Izzy and Clary bonding, too, and it's fun seeing them work together. The girl talk was also pretty fun, although I feel a little bad for Clary. It seems like everyone is making a big deal out of the fact that she and Jace haven't had sex. I'm sure that doesn't help her insecurity. And they haven't even been together for that long!

As for Camille...I figured she was just stalling for time or playing some kind of trick.

  3. I do love the fact that Clary reached out to Izzy. It is obvious from their girl talk that Izzy wants to be there for Clary, and I can see them becoming extremely close friends. I also noticed how much Izzy really likes Simon in this chapter, too. She expected more of him!

Camille seems very vulnerable in this chapter. She requests Magnus because she is depending on their past relationship and Magnus' loyalty. She assumes that he will jump to her defense. I thought that her request was very well played. I just hope that Magnus changes out of his lederhosen before he arrives!

  4. I like that Clary talked to Izzy. It reminds me of in CoB when Iz said that she didn’t know many girls, or kids in general, her age. It seemed to humanize Izzy and to pull her away from the kick butt warier persona. I liked how open she got with Simon. It was brutally honest. This personable side of her is really nice to see.

And Camille? Wow. I don’t know. She seems to hold a grudge instead of being angry. Maybe this may come up in Clockwork Princess. And wasn’t her and Magnus slightly touched on in CP? I really don’t have much to say about her just because I don’t like her. Probably because she is the villain. I don’t like villains. Even lesser ones. She seems like a lesser evil person. If lesser is even a word. I would love to read Camille and Magnus’s story one day though.

  5. I was so surprised when I realised that Clary called for Lizzy! Actually, I would have never think to her! I really like Isabelle's character because I think she is quite like me, speaking of personality. She is never afraid of saying what she really thinks, she doesn't care hurting people with her words because she knows she's saying the truth. The best part of her is that you can perfectly see that under this "fake" strongness she's very sensitive, like for the Simon thing, she wanted to show she's ok but she's not at all.
Camille is so charming! God, she's still so mysterious to me! Having read Clockwork Prince I think I know why she called Magnus Bane (:

  6. I think the resentment and hostility that most downworlders feel are because shadow hunters act as if they are better then down worlders. I was quite shocked at the way Jace and Mayrse murdered Camille's two subjugates. What did they do? The subjugate that Mayrse killed was cowering, should they not get a trial like Camille?
Camille is asking for Magnus because of their past relationship but also because he is a downworlder who she thinks will have some sympathy for her. I like Izzy but I really hoped Clary would have told her off for saying Simon's not in her league.

  7. Kinda figured it was Izzy Clary had called for help....Jace is out of the question for now....Alec is traveling and they aren't that close...Clary and Izzy are good for each other and I loved seeing past Izzys tough shell to the girl within....

Camille is a piece of work...always playing an angle...Magnus is an ancient like herself... am sure they have a history...don't like where this is going though.

  8. its nice to see another side of izzy. this chapter made me like her more than i did before. and i was kindof surprised that clary called izzy and not simon or someone else. but it good that they are bonding and getting along. and i love they was izzy just say whats real. i wasn't really surprised that camille only wanted to talk to magnus. they are both very old and most likely met in the past. but lets see what she tells magnus.

  9. I was happy that there was girl talk because they should be able to just talk to each other. And I like how blunt Izzy is. :)

I don't like how Camille is acting as if she owns Magnus. It makes me worry about Alec and Magnus' relationship.

  10. I was very surprised that Clary called Izzy, I didn't see that coming. I am glad she did and I am glad Izzy went. I love people who speak their mind. I don't understand why Camille is so against the Shadow Hunters. She worked with them in TMI series.

  11. Clary and Izzy bonding, it's about time. I think that right now Izzy is the only one the Clary can trust to help her out with the demons.

Camille does seem to be holding a grudge against the shadow hunters, but in the same token the hold one against her and her kind. Ah Camille and Magnus, you get to get a glimpse of their relationship in ID I wish I knew more. I think she asks for Magnus because they have known each other for a long time and she can trust him no matter what their past has entailed they still help each other out.

  12. Well not really cause Clary wasn't talking to Jace really and Simon was having his struggles. Alec is traveling with Magnus which I find amazing!!=). She had no other option than to call Izzy.
Yeah cause I mean when she commented that I was like what have the Shadowhunters done to you? They were arresting Camille forbthe crime she had done nothing else unless there's more to the story.

This episode was short heheh but I liked it especially the church part, Clary killing the Hydra Demon

    Good Night everyone=)

  13. I love the bond that is forming between Clary and Izzy. Even though Clary struggled with who to call, Izzy was the logical choice.

There is so much about Camille that no one knows. Not even Magnus. This chapter gave readers of the ID series a distinct advantage. I'm so glad that I've read both series. It makes each one so much more interesting.

  14. I agree about Izzy. I loved her in his book. She took on lot more responsibility and her friendship is just what Clary needs. She needs someone who will dish it straight, which I'm not sure Simon can really do since they are so emotionally close to each other.

I understood Camille's anger more after reading CA and CP. She seems very cold, but in CA you really get a sense of her deep hurt for the not always ethical rule of the shadowhunters over downworlders. She's lived for so long that I guess it would be hard to forget all of that. Also, I think she still has feelings for Magnus.

  15. I actually was a little surprised that Clary called Izzy first instead of Jace. But since he is acting so weird and Simon can't go into churches, then Izzy is a great pick. I love that her and Clary are bonding. Both need a girlfriend and they have more in common then they think they do. And sometimes their conversations are just so funny. But yes my first reaction was shock, but it was very of Clary to call Izzy.
I understand Camille and why she does what she does and why she wants Magnus from reading Clockwork Angel. But I'm sure not everyone has so I don't want to spoil anything. All I will say is go read Clockwork Angel, everything will make way more sense.

  16. I think Izzy is realizing that Clary is a shadow hunter and they are going to became friends, maybe nor best friends but they both care about Jace, so is normal they bond.

  17. I think that Clary really wants to be able to rely on Jace and call on him when she needs him, but he's not making it very easy for her. So calling Izzy is the next best thing. I like that Izzy is no nonsense and says exactly what's on her mind. She wouldn't be Izzy if she didn't do that, and I think that makes her a good friend for Clary.

Oh Camille. It doesn't surprise me that she has a bitterness towards the Shadowhunters, and you really can pick up on it in this. I think Magnus is probably the only person, downworlder or not, that she feels she can trust, but if you haven't read CA or CP then I don't want to say anymore than that.

  18. I agree that Clary would have preferred to call on Jace but what else can she do - Jace is distant and unavailable.

Camille is really angry and I think there's more story there.
