Welcome to the next installment of The Mortal Instruments Movie Monday! You can read about how this meme came to be here. Today's post is a feature I've actually had in the works for a few weeks now. It's one that started long before I visited the TMI set, and before I knew I was going to start this meme. It's one that has been fueled by the hate that has been going around about Jamie playing Jace.
I want to go on record and state that I firmly believe, think, and feel that Jamie is going to nail his role as Jace. I'm no longer going well he doesn't quiet look the part or I'm not really sure... I'm 100% convinced he was the right person cast for this role. Let me explain to you why I think that, and what changed my mind. *sorry, no movie set secrets will be revealed in this post... I'm so excited I get to share a little something about my set visit in regards to Jamie, which is near the end of this post*
I want to go on record and state that I firmly believe, think, and feel that Jamie is going to nail his role as Jace. I'm no longer going well he doesn't quiet look the part or I'm not really sure... I'm 100% convinced he was the right person cast for this role. Let me explain to you why I think that, and what changed my mind. *
It's no secret that I was the only one from MM's who hadn't fully bought into the casting of Jamie as Jace. I've always said that if Cassie was all for his casting, then I would support that. After all, it is her book being brought to life, and she's the one who needs to feel like the person cast as Jace is believable to not only her, but the fans as well. Long before there was any movie talk, and shortly after City of Bones was released I read the book, fell in love and from the moment I read about Jace, I always pictured Alex P as Jace. Here's the Alex P I pictured:

Here's the problem I now have with Alex P playing Jace, and I know, I'm shocked I'm saying this. Well I'm shocked, but I know Sophie who's been a supporter of Jamie from the get go isn't shocked. She's already got her "I Told You" moment (like I knew she would), and is most likely grinning ear to ear over my coming out and saying this, Alex P no longer looks like/Jace, at least to me. I know, I can't believe he's aged, what was he thinking?!?! See if the movie was filmed back when Alex looked like Jace, he, I think would have rocked the part. To me in these two pictures only (featured above), he looks like Jace.
Now.....
NOT at all. He's aged well, but not for the part of Jace. Looking at this picture which is a more recent picture of him, and then looking at the ones above, he's lost that Jace look to me. *sniff, sniff* At first I was a bit devastated over my realization that Sophie might be right. I finally understood what Twilight fans felt when Rob was first cast as Edward. Let me just say, I was apart of that fandom long before a movie was ever mentioned, and when it was announced and casting was announced, holy crap people were so incredibly hateful towards Rob. I was shocked. Funny thing happened, most of those people ended up LOVING Rob, because he portrayed the Edward many of them had in their head. He didn't look the part to them, but Rob brought Edward to life, and I've got a feeling the same thing is going to happen all over again only this time it's going to be with Jamie playing Jace.

Time and time again she'd send me clips from Camelot and tell how great he was going to be, and that he'd totally win me over. For the record Sophie, YOU WERE RIGHT. There I told everyone ;) lol. I totally get now what Sophie has been telling me all along, that Jamie will bring Jace to life, not just the one side of Jace, but all those crucial sides. The dark sides, the witty sides, the in love Jace and the Jace that tries to push everyone away.

Prior to my invite to the TMI movie set, I took it upon myself to see what it was that I thought Alex P had that Jamie didn't to play the role of Jace. You know what after watching Alex's movie I found myself no longer believing in the Alex P image of Jace. I'll admit, it's incredibly hard to let go of that, since I've pictured him from the get go. Here's the thing, I know Alex P fans might turn on me for saying this, based on the movies I watched of Alex and one of his recent releases, I don't think he would have done justice to Jace's role. *gasp* *deep breath* I know, I just said that and while it might be a little shocking, I truly believe what I'm saying. In watching his latest movies, I don't think he would have brought the image of Jace I've had in my mind to life. Believe me, this is a little hard to openly confess on here, but I'm going to, because for so many reasons, and some I can't yet list, Jamie IS Going To Do an Incredible Job at Playing Jace. Here's when I had my "Oh he's Jace moment".... when I watched this video of him (This video went to my friends at TMI Source, while I had the one of Lily. These were sent to us prior to our set visits for fans to post their comments and questions to the cast on each of the sites visiting the movie set):
I kid you know not, there was something about Jamie in this video that made me go, "he's Jace". He may not have the chiseled jawline Alex P has at the top pictured that I always pictured Jace having, but he's Jace, at least to me. I don't know how else to explain it, but I swear this was something in the way he presented himself in this video that made me realize that my reservations about him were lame, and I had no need to worry if he was going to bring Jace to life. Cassie from the get go has told fans she thinks he's going to do amazing job. If you know Cassie, you know she doesn't say something like that just to appease fans. She says what she means. Though I believed her, I wasn't sold on Jamie until I had my "ah ha!" moment while watching this.
Image wise, there have always been a select few pictures I've found of Alex P's that were Jace like to me. With this post, I felt the need to go and look for a few of Jamie's I felt were Jace like as well. Here's a few that I found.

And possibly Jace just hanging out with family/friends, though Jace doesn't really seem like the "hang out" kind of guy. lol
I totally get that Jamie's role of Jace won't necessarily win people over picture wise. I'm with you guys, I need to see the person in their role in order for me to be truly converted to their casting, but much like Rob's role in playing Edward, I think Jamie bringing Jace to life on the big screen will convince fans he was the right person for the role. From the little bit I saw in the clip above I think he's not going to have any problems doing that. To add to all that all I've mentioned above, * I can say meeting him and hearing what he had to say about playing his character sealed the deal for me on why he was cast to play Jace. There will be much more to discuss about Jamie playing Jace in my part 2 in this post coming up at a feature date.

I always pictured Alex P. as Jace too. And I totally agree with you, he had the look once, and I think he has the right attitude, but I wasn't so sure he'd be the right actor for the part. I was really hoping for an unknown actor. I love when they cast unknown actors for these type roles because it leaves me much more open minded. I've never been sold on Jamie as Jace. He doesn't have the look of the Jace in my mind at all, but I do think he probably has the right attitude and can pull the acting off well. I'm looking forward to the movie and seeing if I can get on board! :)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! I love it when they cast not so well known actors in big roles as well. I think after TMI is out, Jamie will be a house hold name. I totally get what you're saying about Jamie. His selling point will be his acting and I have come to realize that he can do it. Sophie's told me all along that he can. She loved him in Camelot, and she's said from the get go I'd fall in love with him playing Jace, but I've not been so sure about it until recently. I'm really eager to see how he brings Jace to life.
DeleteJust throwing this in there, Alex was proper close to playing Jace. Ive spoken to Alex and he was having a hard time deciding what to do but in the end, he was really to busy with other projects to add Mortal Instruments into his crazy busy life. He also loves doing lots of different movies, rather than long series and if this is succesful, there will be a lot of movies. So i just wanted to let you guys know that he was actually very close to playing Jace and i think with some hair dye, makeup, and a shaved face he could pull off Jace (not that im saying anyone is wrong, just my opinion) :) and i tried to convince him to play Jace cause im a huge Mortal Instruments fan and then i would have conncetions to the movie..but guess not! :P anyway, i think Jamie will hopefully be able to pull off Jace, i hear hes a good actor, so i think itll work out :)

DeleteLike so many others I wanted Alex P. to play Jace more than anything else but he's changed his look and you can't blame him for that. He probably wants to move out of the book-turn-movie phase anyway so good for him. As for Jamie, as soon as I found out he was going to be our Jace . . . I was surprised at first but I totally loved the idea of him being my Jace (after all I've seen his previous acting work and liked him a lot). He IS Jace and I can see why the casting people chose him. He has the mood, the wit and a dark/cheeky side to him as well so I can't wait to see him in action! Sure he'll surprise everyone who still doesn't like him as Jace.

DeleteThat I swear is what I'm starting to see and what's made me realize they have cast the perfect person for Jace. I think that wit and cheeky side are key to playing Jace, and after watching Alex P's movies, that's not something I saw with him. I mean he's got Jace's attitude, but not the other complex sides of him that we've all fallen in love with via the books. I'm dying to see him as Jace on the big screen.
I've always loved Jamie as Jace from the begining and I hate when fans keep hating on him and insist with Alex P. I mean.. get over it! It's not gonna happen. I'm pretty sure that jamie is gonna nail it and blow our minds away. Greetings an salutations from Argentina.

DeleteI understand everyone having their opinions, I actually don't know Alex P's or Jamie's work so that is kind of mute for me. I think my only concern (if you can call it that) is that I wish they would have had Jamie put on a little more mass. By no means do I think he should be huge but for my idea of Jace Jamie is a little to willowy right now.

One to blew my mind and make me weak in the knees and to stare with my jaw on the floor when he came out on the screen.LOL I wasn't 100% certain about Alex P either, he seemed too... rough around the edges or something. But I was very happy when they announced Jamie would play Jace, because even though physically Alex P might look more like the Jace in my mind, I'm SURE Jamie's acting is *gasp* SO much better. And just like you said above, he can pull of that Jace attitude. Just you wait, when the movie comes out, everyone is going to be Rob P who...? :))
ReplyDeleteYES, that's what I love about unknown actors. They burst onto the scene and take our breathes away with their performances. With known actors you go in there having this expectation of them and we except them to exceed it. I totally agree with what you said about Jamie's acting. I've not seen him in a lot of stuff, but in watching Alex's acting vs Jamie's in Camelot, I think Jamie can bring that fire that Jace has about him, that Alex I don't think could give Jace. I think it's just something about Jamie... he just has it. To me that goes beyond on acting, and I think that's why I was sold on him being Jace on the video above. He just seems to have it.

He is an actor with depth and I have no doubt he is our Jace. I can't wait to see him on screen! I only wish you lived closer so we could go together!

From what I've seen in watching his past performances, he seems to really have it... I can't even explain what that "IT" is. He just has it, and I don't know how I missed it before... or wait, I do. I was being stubborn and so Jace like before I didn't want to see it. LOL I wish I lived closer as well!

Admittedly, I personally was never a fan of Alex and I wanted Jamie to be Jace as soon as his name got mentioned. I think Jamie is absolutely perfect and am thrilled that he is bringing our beloved Jace to life! And like you, I am positive that once the movie is out, everyone - including the haters and the sceptics - will be blown away = converted, lol!

DeleteI've been saying, since the news came out that Jamie was playing Jace, that if Cassie Clare approves of him and asks us fans to trust her when we can't view his audition tape, then that's good enough for me! DeleteI love this. I kinda don't get the haters why they hate on Jamie as Jace. Again and again, I have said this, it's unfair for the guy. I was also a part of Alex as Jace bandwagon. My friend kinda told me about Alex while I was reading the books, so even though I was not the kind of reader that sees distinct faces on the characters, every now and then I see the young Alex P as Jace when I read the books. So when they announced that Jamie was playing Jace I was kinda sad and disappointed tbh. Yeah sure, alex turned down the role but what made me really sad at first was that I really didn't like Jamie then. I was not a big fan of him. First saw him in Sweeney Todd, and I kinda didn't like him but I must admit that Jamie is a really good actor. But as time passed and as I watched interviews of him, I saw why the directors chose him, and why Lily was so set on him on playing Jace. Jamie has this natural sarcastic, sexy, witty and arrogant vibe in him that is SO JACE. I mean when I see the young Alex, you can easily say yea he Looks like Jace, but you can't feel that vibe I saw in Jamie with Alex. So yea, like you I have completely jumped on the Jamie as Jace bandwagon. I mean look at him he is effortlessly Jace.

ReplyDeleteFirst of all I have to say I'm a fan of Jamie. I've always had a crush on him, i think he's talented and handsome and funny and more.
At the beginning I was one of those who pictured Alex P. as Jace. I don't think he looks too aged to play the role. He's just 22 (younger than Jamie) and without the beard and with lightened hair you can see the same Alex of the two pics at the top.
This said, when I knew that Jamie C. B. was been choosen for portray Jace I was super happy. He wasn't the Jace I had figured in my mind but, after all, even Alex wasn't. I totally trust in Jamie, I know he'll do a great job. He has the perfect personality: charming, witty, ironic, and he can be deep when it's needed. This is a huge occasion for Jamie, and he totally deserves it. And I have to say that more time I see Jamie on the set, more I'm convinced he's pefect for the role. Now, I can't see anyone else as Jace in the movie. I'm sure many other people will change their mind with time.

He's an impressive actor and I know he'll do an amazing job with Jace. His acting in this movie will leave fans speechless.
There's something almost delicate about Jamie. I suppose it's his Britishness, which I love! So in my mind, when I picture Jace moving, talking, jesturing, or even fighting, I see him with a graceful litheness that comes from his (extra) angelic DNA. I cant imagine Alex EVER being able to pull that off. Ive seen I Am Number Four, Beastly, and other films he's in, and I can honestly say that he's a one note actor, versus Jamies amazingly versitial roles. Jamie will do Jace justice.
ReplyDeleteAGREED!! That's what I finally saw when I re-watched Alex's movie. Jamie will bring to Jace what Jace's character really needs. I hope that's not confusing. I think he'll do an amazing job! I personally feel he'll do for Jace what no one else can.

ReplyDeleteI never really understood the Alex hype, maybe its just because he's not my type of guy but i dont know, he just never did anything for me. I always see him as just someone who expects to get by on looks alone, he doesnt seem to have much substance and for jace i wanted an actor who id love to watch interviews about TMI with him in over and over again and i think with Jamie his personality is so fun and quirky that i could just watch him talk and be himself 24/7. I dont think this is 'just another movie' for jamie either, he gets how big this is and he's took the time to prep and get in character and really get to know jace and to me thats so much more important than choosing an actor just because he has a few muscles and used to have blonde hair.
I couldnt be happier when alex turned down the role if im honest, i just wanted something more.. and i think jamie has that special something and hes just going to be perfect

DeleteGreat post! I always had Alex in my head because it was said he was going for the role. Esp when I am number four came out. But then the years ticked by and I did have my doubts, he was getting older and if they end up making all 3 or 6 movies we need a lead who can still look 17. I hadn't thought of Jamie until it was announced, but as soon as it did I was sold. Ok maybe a certain cave seen in Camelot sealed the deal for me. But as a HP & Twilight fan I new a bit of his work, new he was Bonnie Wrights partner at the time, so was happy with the casting. And oh my that accent, I'm glad they are keeping it

DeleteI'm definitely still on the fence with Jamie as Jace. We haven't seen him acting as Jace yet, so I can't really fully decide. But I won't lie, when I first heard about him being cast, I had to make myself a drink I was so upset lol I just thought, oh no, they've killed the movie before it's started. But I'm really hoping that Jamie will prove me wrong and be the best Jace we could have ever hoped for. He seems like he really cares about the project and that makes me feel a bit more at ease. Here's hoping for an amazing movie! I'll be at the midnight showing regardless because I love this story so much =D Good luck Jamie!

As I mentioned above, meeting Jamie and hearing what he had to say about playing Jace sealed the deal for me on why he was cast to play Jace. I have zero doubts about him. I think he's going to surprise a lot of fans with his portrayal of Jace.
DeleteWhen I first found out Jamie was cast I emailed my friend saying "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I HAVE TERRIBLE NEWS! Well I think it's terrible anyway. They've supposedly cast Jace. Apparently Jamie Campbell Bower is gonna be playing him. I like him, but not for Jace. I guess I shall just have to get used to it. Oh well."

So I obviously was all about the looks because even prior to Jamie being cast I did like his acting in other things I'd seen. I was just so set on having Alex P as Jace haha. Now I'm not. I'm all for Jamie being Jace now and I agree that Alex P (even though I love him) doesn't have the acting range to portray Jaces deepth.
YAY!! I love hearing how many fans have come to love Jamie playing Jace! I know it's hard to let go of an image of Jace we've had for a long time, but I really don't see how Alex P could portray Jace on the level that I think Jamie can, will and is going to do. I can't wait to see this movie on the big screen!
DeleteI still have a hard time accepting Jamie as well as the other actors. What I really wanna see is photos of them in character. That will hook me for sure to see them actually being the part.

ReplyDeleteWhen Jamie was cast my immediate reaction was, "Awww.....-OH!!! I can see him in the role!!!" I've been following Jamie's career since Sweeney Todd and think he is a magnificent actor. I also met him a few years and he was just the nicest guy. Not to mention I swooned when he looked me with those gorgeous eyes and spoke with that sexy accent! ;)
I really wish that people would stop being so negative toward Jamie and just wait until the movie is released. Then, and only then, can you decide if you like him in the role or not. If people keep saying mean things about him now, they may end up eating their words later.
How cool you got to meet him Alex. I think a lot of people are forgetting that Alex turned down the role to accept roles not related to YA books being turned into movies. Which is understandable since he starred in three movies that all were based on books. I agree, I think judgment should be kept for after seeing the movie.

DeleteRegardless of whether or not you are a Jamie or Alex fan, this is such an unfair statement. It is obvious that the first two pictures of Alex were taken in a studio with lighting, hair, and makeup teams. The bottom picture is a candid shot and few actors look amazing in these shots. It is not even taken from the same angle (the first two frontal views, the bottom is from the side). He most definitely can look like that again because it was not taken that long ago. This is not a strong argument at all. The issue people have with Jamie is not that he is unattractive, it is that he is just not the body type that Cassandra spent so much time describing. No amount of makeup can change body type...that would have to be CGI.
ReplyDeleteThe first two shots of Alex were taking a few years ago, and it is a fair statement since that's how I personally viewed Jace from back in the day. It doesn't matter if I showed 5 or 15 pictures. They would have all showed Alex aging. It's not a bad thing, but with his aging he's grown out of looking more like Jace, for my taste. I agree, Alex has the body type, but in the end the body type and looks pail little in compassion to how a person can act, and I don't think Alex has what it takes to bring Jace to life like Jamie does.

DeleteNot trying to be rude but Jace is 16/17, i have never once in my life heard anyone describe a 16/17 year old as 'handsome'. Jace is described as almost everything but handsome, to be fair.

I love the Books and I look forward to the film, My only question Is Why did you you get someone that is so (no offence) scrawny to play Jace? I'm sure He is a decent actor and has the facial features but He does not seem to have the build of Jace. I mean no offence, I was merely a bit disappointed. thank you
ReplyDeleteThat's a very valid question. I think they're casting of Jace was based on the person who really brought all the characteristics of Jace to life vs casting someone who looked the part. I think once we see Jamie in his Shadowhunter clothes he'll look more the part. I get it's hard to envision him as Jace without seeing him in costume. Once fans see him, I think more people will see why he was cast for the role.
DeleteI always had 2 choices for Jace 1. Alex P and 2. Jamie. My only quandary with casting was the pic for Clary and Alec both I think don't fit the image at all. Alec is supposed to be more thin figured not old looking and buffed out. Clary needs red hair like fire or carrot top red. The rest if the cast seems possible to me except for those two I mentioned.

DeleteI wasn't really sure if Jamie had the right look either, but I really couldnt think of anyone specifically that I wanted to play Jace. So I trusted Cassie that he was a good fit. And the more I see him in pics and watch clips, I have to agree with the decision. He is Jace, through and through. And I have to admit, seeing him is his gear in the clip above, he looks yummy to me!

DeleteI never had a specific actor in mind for Jace so much, maybe its the actress in me that is less concerned with looks and more about delivery. I do remember being a little surprised that of all actors Jamie got the role because I have seen several of his performances and none really stood out as Jace-like (and yes, I have seen Camelot) however I am withholding judgement until I actually see him in the role. But I figure is the author who CREATED Jace approves, he's gotta be good.

DeleteI can understand and agree that Jamie. He will most likely bring the role to life (and I am not going to say more about AP being too old to play Jace. But when they get to the final book, his bald spot may look a bit odd).
ReplyDeleteCan you be as clear in explaining why Jane Levy was not a better choice to play Clary?? After all, she is Clary in addition to being more athletic to fulfill some of the requirements of the role.
You'd have to ask the movie studio that. I have no idea when it's comes to casting. This post was just me commenting on why I now see Jamie as playing Jace. :)

DeleteThe only reason that I was for Alex P., was from pictures people had posted. He had the looks, yes, but I realize that's not all there is to it. The casting directors do this as their profession. I trust in that fact that they know what's more important in casting an actor than I do. Not to mention, for those who are worried based on looks, it's "Hollywood" people! LOL...they can make anyone look anyway they need to! I think he'll be great, and I'm with you, if Cassandra Clare loves him, then I'll love him too. Thanks for the post; I enjoyed reading it!

DeleteI think it's the same thig as it was with casting Peeta, Harry, Frodo etc. Fans hate them at first, well come on, you can't please everyone, but these actors will win (almost) everyone over. If you follow Jamie on twitter you know immediately that he has the right attitude and he is as witty as Jace. He brings something extra to the character, you can tell that even now without seeing the movie. Yes, he doesn't have that exact look, but shouldn't one be happy that he has the sould of Jace? I mean.. I get where people are coming from, yes, but the casting is over. Done. Finito. Get over! Like.. You can't do anything about it and whining just doesn't help anyone. It causes stress to the actors, to the fans and to yourself. So my opinion is that everyone should just freaking calm down, wait for the movie and then speak your mind :D And as you already mentioned, Alex doesn't have that look anymore. It's the same thing when it comes to the Vampire Academi movie.. Ben Barnes is too old to play Dimitri when the filming eventually starts (if it even begins, because they've been pushing this project for years now and no progress whatsoever.. well, minor things, yes, but seems like we'll have to wait for a few years at least if not longer). So yeah, I get where everyone's coming from, but give the guy a break already. A. Pettyfer is gorgeous, talented and yes, he really looked like Jace once, but aren't we happy that Jamie gets to play Jace since when you look at the movies Pettyfer's been in while looking like Jace (Beastly, I Am Nr. 4) haven't been that great.. IANF didn't even get a second part, Beastly wasn't that believable (and oh well, V. Hudgens isn't that great of an actress anyway) so.. Yeah. I am glad Jamie got that role and with the rest of this AMAZING cast they can bring these books to life in ways we never expected. I am excited and I hope every fan is whether or not one still cries about Pettyfer not being cast as Jace. We have this Jace. We love him. Most of us do. Nothing you can do about it so let's just all wait for the movie and enjoy this awesome experience of watcing our favorite books and characters moving from our minds to the big screen. And I am glad you softened about this topic. He deserves so much love and support. Looking forward to part two and sry for this long, long, long comment :D Hope you didn't fell asleep. He won the part, not Alex P, nor anyone else. Jamie was chosen for a reason and I know we'll all see that reason when the movie is out. I'm incredibly excited over the ENTIRE CAST for TMI. As I said in my post, from meeting Jamie and hearing him talk about the character of Jace, I know he's going to be brilliant. I can't wait to share more of my conversion on Jamie's casting.
DeleteAlex P. in the pictures you said he looks like Jace will always be that image of Jace for me. I thought it a stroke of fate of the movie world that his two big US movies came out right as they were casting for TMI and they straight up offered him the part. For "I Am Number 4" I think he still VERY MUCH looked like Jace. I would have loved it. However, after watching that movie, Beastly, and a few others, his acting isn't up to par to play the part. The look is there, and always will be, but I'd rather have a better actor. Though Jamie may be a better actor, the boy is skinny as hell. If Taylor Lautner could put on 20 pounds a younger guy, why the heck couldn't Jamie? Genetics? Possibly, but the SINGLE thing that is preventing me from saying "he's perfect" is how ridiculously skinny he is. Otherwise, he would be. His facial features aren't even that bad, but those limp tiny arms, not doing it for me. What's also interesting is that Kevin Zegers playing Alec LOOKED like Alec when he was younger, like Alex P. did Jace. Some of his younger pics, he's the perfect Alec. Now he just seems old and awkward to me. But that's just my opinion. Yep. Thanks for your input.
ReplyDeleteYES! I totally agree with you! I would much rather have an actor who can act the part and become the character I love, vs having an actor who can't act but has the look down. Not saying Alex P is a bad actor, but I don't think he would have done Jace justice like Jamie will. Nor am I saying Jamie isn't bad looking. He's a good looking guy, he just doesn't look like the Jace I envisioned BUT I think he will become that person when I see the movie. His acting will out shine any worries fans have and they'll all see why he was cast for this part.

ReplyDeleteME TOO! That video above he has Jace mannerism and that's what sold me prior to going to the movie set. I think he's really going to surprise so many people in this movie. I really think his transformation into Jace will amaze even the toughest critics.
DeleteFirst let me say that I am positively excited with Jamie as Jace. Initially he did not physically strike me as Jace but the more I watch him the more I realize that he will be DYNAMITE! As for Rob as Edward, I never liked him and still do not think he comes close to portraying my mental image of Edward. But Jamie will be incredible. I cannot wait for this movie!

DeleteYou bring up some really good points, but I'm always going to wish that Alex P was cast as Jace. No matter what, he just seems perfect to me; I've always pictured Jace to look just like him. To me, Alex really captures Jace's character.
ReplyDeleteAs for Jamie, I'm unsure about him for now, but if Cassie says he's good, then I believe her. It'll take some time to get used to him, but I think he might end up doing a good job as Jace. One can hope! :)

DeleteJust a little something you all might not have known... Alex Pettyfer was also seen by the casting crew as the perfect role for Jace Wayland, and he was indeed one of the first young men to be offred the rold of Jace. Pettyfer enjoyed the books and loved his character. Unfortunately, he is busy filming another movie - Magic Mike, and The Apprentice?. He also stated that he believes he is too old for the role and wants to focus on more grown-up movie roles, which is (kind of) understandable.
ReplyDeleteMANY do not agree with his decision, but I guess we can't do anything about it. All of the Alex-for-Jace-lovers will have to deal with Jamie being the one, or just not watching the movie at all, if it bothers them so much, although people really shouldn't be so single-minded.

Yes, I knew he was offered the role, and I also know he turned it down, which is understandable given he was also in three movies that were based on books. According to some reports, he didn't want to continue one being an actor who was only in movies made based on YA books. Which I can understand. There was also a LOT of people who wanted the role of Jace, and in the end I truly believe the casting director knew what they were doing when they cast Jamie.

I watched Camelot and definitely saw Jamie as Jace. He will do a great job am sure, and eventually nobody will be able to see anyone else as Jace. Plus, I love it that the Shadowhunters will have English (not British) accent. Probably because I am English :)

DeleteI was thrilled when I learned these books are going to be on the big screen and even more when rumours spread Alex P. would be Jace. As he actually looks like the Jace on the book covers I tought he was perfect. When I heard Jamie would be Jace I was totally disappointed. Not because he was given this role - I knew nothing about him, exept for having seen him in the Twilight movies - but due to the fact Alex P. would not be Jace. I could absolutely not imagine Jamie as Jace. So I picture googled him and was stunned to find he might fit even better than AP. What totally convinced me was seing him move and talk. I think he's not the obviously handsome guy but he's got that special something at second sight. So now I'm completely happy with him being Jace and I'm convinced he's going to do an awesome job!

DeleteI think that most people (including myself) can say that they pictured Alex Pettyfer for the role of Jace. Although I was a little disappointed to learn that Alex turned down the role, I was very much pleased and excited when I found out that Jamie had gotten the part of Jace. I think Jaime is an amazing actor and I truly believe that he is going to do an amazing job. Everyone should really give him a chance. Just as the article mentioned, everyone hated the thought of Rob playing the part of Edward in Twilight, but as soon as the movie came out and everyone watched it, everyone and their grandma fell in love with Rob and now wants to have his baby lol. So please give Jaime a chance. He is such an amazing actor and I truly believe that he will bring Jace to life. Once the movie comes out, I'm pretty sure everyone will be whistling a different tune once they see Jaime in action as Jace. After that everyone will have their ah ha! moment and I will be proud to say that I was a full supporter of Jaime from the beginning. I'm fairly certain that once the movie comes out, everyone will want to have Jaime's baby as well lol!

DeleteThe thing is, as soon as i described Jace i couldnt help but picture Alex, so ive been picturing him as Jace from the very beginning and im having a hard time changing that image to Jamie. Ive never seen Jamie's acting, but i heard hes good so if he plays Jace well, then ill be happy. I do think that Alex could still pull off Jace though. If they bleacjed his hair and made him look younger with some makeup and he shaved it could work and hes definitely sassy enough, but i guess we'll just have to wait and see how Jamie pulls it together! :)

DeleteI totally understand! I have always seen Alex P as Jace, as I mentioned above. It was extremely hard for me to let that image go. Rarely do I read a book and immediately picture someone in my head as that person, but Alex P was the person right off the bat that I pictured. BUT Jamie has what it takes and what's needed to play Jace. Sure he doesn't look exactly like how I pictured him, but I truly feel that his mannerisms, his whit and just the way he presents himself is going to shine through in his role as Jace, and that's what I would rather have in this role. Someone who truly gets Jace and can deliver the Jace I love, vs having someone play the role of Jace based on his looks and not deliver on the acting. I really think you'll love Jamie as Jace after you see the movie.

DeleteWhen I first saw the casting hopes for Alex P on twitter, I agreed that he absolutely looked the part, but I'd never seen him in,anything before. So I went off and saw I Am Number Four and Beastly. And they were ok... Not fabulous, but ok. But I wasn't convinced he had the acting skills to pull of a character like Jace, who is so complex in such subtle ways. The when he took so long (months) to decide whether or not to take the role, I realised he didn't really want it. I'll admit I raised my eyebrows a bit when they announced Jamie, but he's got the skills to pull it off, and I think he'll be great.

I did at first picture someone with a different jawline and facial structure, but when Jamie's hair is waved back over his ears and he wears the black clothing and tattoos, I think he can pull it off wonderfully. His voice is pitch-perfect for the role, as well. I think Alex P. would have been a good choice a while back, but he seems to look more boyish around the eyes, and not as serious as Jamie.

DeleteI love Cassie and support her 100%...but I am still not convinced...I didn't like him in Camelot, and he looks like a girl to me now, AND too skinny - like he is on drugs. BUT I believe in Cassie and she backs him 100% so who the hell am I to oppose! I just hope they make the movie right and we don't have another Twilight fiasco that almost ruins the books for me.
ReplyDeleteI think you'll be pleasantly surprised with Jamie's performance and the movie once you've seen it. I totally understand how you're feeling. I think the TMI movies will be the exception to the rule with books being made into movies. I truly believe this one movie that will be done right.
DeleteI agree with so much of this article. I read the series the first time with Alex in mind. I favorited all the tumblr graphics as well. It wasn't until Magic Mike that I realized how wrong I was. Alex really is too old to play Jace in so many ways.
ReplyDeleteI too was upset about the casting of Jamie at first, but in re-reading the book the second time, I realize he's the ONLY person I can picture for Jace. His looks are angelic in an unusual way. He is intense from his eyes to the way he carries himself. I, for one, cannot WAIT for him to play Jace.
