passage, n.
i. A brief section of music composed of a series of notes and flourishes.
ii. A journey by water; a voyage.
iii. The transition from one place to another, across space and time.

In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles, but years from home. And she's inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she's never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods–a powerful family in the Colonies–and the servitude he's known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can't escape and the family that won't let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, his passenger, can find. In order to protect her, Nick must ensure she brings it back to them–whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods' grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home... forever.

My Review

This was one of my most anticipated 2016 releases, and it lived up to everything I had hoped it would be and then some. PASSENGER is one of the books that from the moment I started reading it, there was no putting it down until I was done. This book is a fantastic read!! My only compliant about it, is now I have to impatiently wait for the sequel.

Alexandra Bracken's writing was awesome. I don't even know what else to say about it. I loved the way she wrote this book. Everything in this story had a purpose. From the characters, to the details about the time periods they are from, to the plot, there's a reason for each of these being in the story. I love it when an author does that. The story was well paced, yet I felt that the story flew by as I was reading it. I didn't feel like there was a shortage of action. Even during the 'slower' parts of the story, which wasn't often, there's still something going on, but not to a point that it over loads you. It just makes you want to read the story faster.

Character wise, I love complicated, smart, not afraid to speak their mind characters. One of my favorites from the story is Etta. It was interesting to see how she changed from the girl I first met at the beginning of the story, to the girl she becomes. I like that she's not afraid to speak her mind, and that through out all that she goes through, her loyalty never waivers. Then there's Nicholas. I loved being able to get inside his head, because there's so much going on in there. I loved getting to see how at war he is with himself over what he wants, and what he's feeling. There's a lot to his story, and I really enjoyed getting to know him. Most of all, I loved that no matter what, he would never let anything happen to Etta. *sigh*

The romance in this book is one of my favorites. It's not a love at first sight at all. It's more of an awe and wonder at first sight, between Etta and Nicholas. I liked that they had a mutual respect for each other. Now I won't say too much about their relationship, because it would contain some spoilers, however, I will say that despite the two different paths these characters are on, I loved that they do fall for each other. Part of their relationship is figuring out what the future holds for the two of them. Why do things have to be so complicated!?! Can I please have the sequel now? I need to know things that happen next.

Oh this plot! It's complex, and addicting. Don't even try to figure out what's going on, because the moment you do, the plot thickens further, casting you further into the deceptive world Etta and Nicholas are each apart of. I can honestly say, I didn't see half the things coming. That was brilliant! What I loved most about this story, aside from the writing, was the way Alexandra wove together the elements of time travel, history, romance, deception, danger, and plenty of action, so perfectly. She ripped my heart out, stitched back together, and then left me wanting more.
