ABOUT THE BOOK

Ever since the Titans appeared in her Detroit neighborhood, Astrid Sullivan's world has revolved around the mechanical horses. It's not just the thrill of the race. It's the engineering of the horses themselves and the way they're programmed to seem so lifelike. The Titans are everything that fascinates Astrid, and nothing she'll ever touch.

She hates them a little, too. Her dad lost everything betting on the Titans. And the races are a reminder of the gap between the rich jockeys who can afford the expensive machines and the working class friends and neighbors of Astrid's who wager on them.

But when Astrid's offered a chance to enter an early model Titan in this year's derby, well, she decides to risk it all. Because for a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, it's more than a chance at fame or money. Betting on herself is the only way she can see to hang on to everyone in the world she cares about.

Centuries ago, the barriers between our world and the Otherworld were slashed open allowing hideous fantastical monsters to wreak havoc; destroying entire cities in their wake. Now, people must live in enclosed communities, behind walls that keep them safe from the evil creatures constantly trying to break in. Only the corps of teen Hunters with lightning reflexes and magical abilities can protect the populace from the daily attacks.

Joyeaux Charmand is a mountain girl from a close knit village who comes to the big city to join the Hunters. Joy thinks she is only there to perform her civic duty and protect the capitol Cits, or civilians, but as cameras follow her every move, she soon learns that the more successful she is in her hunts, the more famous she becomes.

With millions of fans watching her on reality TV, Joy begins to realize that Apex is not all it seems. She is forced to question everything she grew up believing about the legendary Hunters and the very world she lives in. Soon she finds that her fame may be part of a deep conspiracy that threatens to upend the protective structure built to keep dark magic out. The monsters are getting in and it is up to Joy to find out why.
AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Hello Mercedes. Welcome to Mundie Moms! Congratulations on your new release. Hunter is described as a mix of The Hunger Games meets Divergent. How would you describe your book?
Well I would describe it the same way I pitched it; as a post-apocalypse series where the apocalypse broke open the world to powerful magic and allowed terrible things to entire into it.  In fact, it’s partly inspired by the myth of Pandora’s Box.  Humankind opened the box and horror rushed out, but in the bottom of the box was Hope.

What was your favorite element to create?
I like playing around with different systems of magic.  I created a brand new one for this series, especially with regard to the Hounds and the Hunters.

What's one thing you admire about your character, Joyeaux?
Her dedication.  She’s very much one of those people who are practically born with a powerful need to protect and serve.  That really underlies her entire personality.

What authors inspired you as a young readers?
Andre Norton, Zenna Henderson, T.H. White, Elizabeth Goudge, Thomas Burnett Swan, Vera Chapman, Theodore Sturgeon, Tolkein, Fritz Leiber.  Those are the main ones.  I used to write what you’d now call “fanfiction” in Andre Norton’s worlds from about the time I was ten, I think.

What are some of your writing must haves?
My computer obviously!  My zero-g chair.  Classical instrumental music or soundtracks.  I do listen to lots of other sorts of music, but I find non-instrumental is distracting.  And coffee in the “morning.”  I work at night, so “morning” is actually about 4 in the afternoon.

Do you have a favorite quote from Hunter that you can share with us?
There is nothing—nothing—that is more important in a Hunter’s life than protecting the Cits without Powers. And that wasn’t something that had just been drummed into me by the monks and the Masters. That was something I felt just as bone-deep as I did my love for my Hounds and theirs for me.

Which of your characters would your teen self been friends with?
Joy, I hope!  Probably not Knight, because I would never have dared approach him, and not Josh, my teen self was very dorky and wouldn’t have been cool enough for him.  I don’t think I was self-confident enough to have been friends with Armorer Kent or Karly, but I would have looked up to both of them.  I probably would have had a couple friends among the other Hunters back where Joy came from, and a couple among the regular folk there as well.  Not a lot of friends, probably a total half a dozen all told.
Although I make the joke about all my characters that if they ever met me in real life, because of all the grief I put them through, they’d beat me with a baseball bat.
