Simon stood on the sidewalk, staring up at his mother’s brownstone, his stomach churning. Traveling by way of Portal always made him feel a bit like puking up his lower intestine, but this time, he didn’t think he could blame the inter-dimensional magic. Not entirely, at least.
“You sure this is a good idea?” he said. “It’s late.”
“It’s eleven pm, Simon,” Clary said. “You know she’s still awake. And even if she’s not, you know—”
“I know.” His mother would want to see him. So would his sister who, according to Clary, was home for the weekend because someone, presumably a well-meaning, red-headed someone with his sister’s cell number, had told her Simon was stopping in for a visit.
He sagged against Clary for a moment and, small as she was, she bore his weight. “I don’t know how to do it,” he said. “I don’t know how to say goodbye to them.”
Simon’s mother thought he was away at military school. He’d felt guilty lying to her, but he’d known there wasn’t any other choice; he knew, all too well, what happened when he risked telling his mother too much truth. But this, this was something else: He was forbidden by Shadowhunter Law to tell her about his Ascension, about his new life. The Law also forbade him from contacting her after he became a Shadowhunter, and though there was nothing saying he couldn’t be here in Brooklyn to say goodbye to her forever, the Law forbade him from explaining why.
Sed Lex, dura Lex.
The Law is hard, but it is the Law.
Lex sucks, Simon thought.
“You want me to go in with you?” Clary asked.
He did, more than anything—but something told him this was one of those things he needed to do on his own …

Grieving the death of her godfather and haunted by her cousin Cassies betrayal, Barrie returns from a trip to San Francisco to find the Watson plantation besieged by reporters and ghost-hunters. Some are hoping to see the ancient spirit who sets the river on fire each night, while others are chasing rumors of a stolen shipment of Civil War gold that may be hidden at Colesworth Place. Chaos descends as Cassie hires a team of archeologists to excavate beneath the mansion ruins. But more is buried there than treasure.

A mysterious, magical man appears at Watsons Landing, claiming the key to the Watson and Beaufort gifts and the Colesworth curse also lies beneath the mansion. With a mix of threats and promises, he engages Barrie and Cassie in a midnight visit, but the spell he conjurs has potentially deadly consequences.

While Barrie and dreamy Eight Beaufort struggle to make sense of the escalating danger and their growing feelings for each other, Barrie has to figure out not only whom to trust, but which gift is more reliableEights or her own. With millions of dollars and the fate of the founding families at stake, she must choose between what she feels deep in her heart and what will keep her loved ones safe.

COMPULSION hooked me with it's alluring Southern Gothic charms, beautiful writing, and made me fall in love with it's richly rooted Southern history. Then PERSUASION came along and swept me off my feet with it's enchanting mysteries, magic, and oh so addicting romance! This sequel was everything I loved about COMPULSION and a whole lot more!

Jumping right back into Barrie and Eight's world felt like coming home. I couldn't wait to devour what this story would uncover. This time around Martina threw in a few surprises, answered a few lingering questions I had at the end of Compulsion, and left me wanting the next book! This book has suspense, love, romance, magic, curses, mystery and everything I except a beautifully crafted Southern Gothic book to have. Did I mention Romance?

I don't know what it is about a Southern setting and it's romance, but when written well it literally sweeps me off my feet, and leaves me sighing right along with the characters. Barrie, and Eight have this romance that is part sweet, part frustrating, and part I want to whisk them away so they can ride off into the sunset together. I love reading those stolen moments they have together. What I love most about Barrie and Eight is there little touches that make Barrie's heart beat faster. The lean ins, and soft kisses. Their stolen moment on the balcony and all the other times after. Then there's the other side of their relationship that had me on edge. When magic, romance, and curses are involved, mayhem is bound to happen, and trust will be tested. This time there's a lot more at stake for these two that may cost them both their hearts.

It's not just Barrie and Eight that bring this story to life. With a lively cast of characters who can be viewed as friends foes and villains a like, everyone is tied together by the secrets, and curses that bound them to Watson Island in some fashion or another. I love the paranormal characters as much as I love the ones tied to Watson Island. Normally I'm not a fan of the "bad guys", but sometimes it's hard to not like character once you realize they're just as bound to the curses of Watson Island, as everyone else, and doing what they can to survive or break the curse. However, I'm still not a fan of a few characters, but I like that I could at least understand their motive in all that is going on.

I love that just as I think I have things figured out, there's a new twist, or another secret that is revealed, making it harder to determine how things will end. Trust me, that ending was.... well let's just say, I NEED BOOK 3 RIGHT NOW! What I loved in COMPULSION was taken to a whole new level in PERSUASION.  This book has left me wondering who's persuading who, and who's love is real or compelled by magic, and what is going to happen next. I admit it, this time around I thought I was prepared for all Martina was going to throw my way in her book, but she found a way to hit me right in the book feelings.

Martina Boone's writing is spell binding. Everything she describes vibrantly comes to life. Her words are elegantly pieced together, creating an addicting story I can't stop reading. Reading her books has a similar feel to reading a story that has been passed down for generations. It's deeply rooted in Southern history, tied together by generations of family magic and curses, who's closely guarded secrets you can't wait to uncover. I am addicted to her books! Martina Boone blew me away with her debut, Compulsion (you can read my review for it here), and completely blind sided me with her sequel,PERSUASION. I loved this book just as much as I loved her debut! I can not wait for book three!

Speaking of book feels, here's my review in Gifs.
You know what I'm talking about when I say Martina hit me in the book feelings right? It's those feelings that have you doing this...

and then a little bit of this....

And then there's the romance that is like this...

and then, oh yeah, some of this again,

And in the end, just as you feel like you can control your emotions, you're left doing this.

Have I already mentioned that I need book 3, like RIGHT NOW!?!

ABOUT MARTINA BOONE

Martina Boone was born in Prague and spoke several languages before learning English. Her first teacher in the U.S. made fun of her for not pronouncing the "wh" sound right, so she set out to master "all the words”—she's still working on that! In the meantime she’s writing contemporary fantasy set in the kinds of magical places she'd love to visit.

If you like romance steeped in mystery, mayhem, Spanish moss, and a bit of magic, she hopes you'll look forward to meeting Barrie, Eight, Cassie, Pru, Seven and the other characters of Watson Island.
