The world is made safe by a woman...but it is a very big world.

It has been generations since the Storyteller Queen drove the demon out of her husband and saved her country from fire and blood. Her family has prospered beyond the borders of their village, and two new kingdoms have sprouted on either side of the mountains where the demons are kept prisoner by bright iron, and by the creatures the Storyteller Queen made to keep them contained.

But the prison is crumbling. Through years of careful manipulation, a demon has regained her power. She has made one kingdom strong and brought the other to its knees, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. When a princess is born, the demon is ready with the final blow: a curse that will cost the princess her very soul, or force her to destroy her own people to save her life.

The threads of magic are tightly spun, binding princess and exiled spinners into a desperate plot to break the curse before the demon can become a queen of men. But the web of power is dangerously tangled--and they may not see the true pattern until it is unspooled.

MY REVIEW

A spellbinding retelling of a classic fairytale. This is definitely not the story you were told growing up. This story is much more. E.K. Johnston once again proves why she's not only a fantastic writer, but a storyteller as well. Her writing is effortlessly beautiful, and richly detailed. She ensnares you with her incredibly easy to visualize world building, her well crafted story, and diverse characters who easily come to life within the pages of this book.

Johnston's SPINDLE is enchanting. Much like it's predecessor, 'A Thousand Nights', this is a slow burning, mesmerizing fairytale retelling I absolutely loved getting swept up in. I'm not normal someone who enjoys a slow burning anything, unless it's a well written romance, but Johnston's writing is brilliant. No really. No matter how fast I wish I could pace myself, I just can't help but go at the perfectly paced storyline she's created.

Johnston's characters, whether good or bad, all serve a purpose in this story. They make choices I understood. I love it when I feel like I not only understand the characters, I feel like the author really got her characters too. It shows in the way she wrote them. I love the measured strength many of her characters have.

One of the things I love about these characters, is not only the way they come to life on the pages of this book, and the way they bring to the story to life, but the dialogue between them. I really admire that way she gets writing, and creating, and the importance of really pacing the way her characters grow, and interact together. It adds so much more depth to the overall story. That may seem silly to say, but I really wish I could take a writing class from Johnston. I swear her grocery list is most likely elegantly written. Her written is just that, elegant.

This world is enchanting. It's dangerous, powerful, full of magic, hope, love, and so much more. While this story is apart of the 'A Thousand Nights' world, I love that it's very much it's own story. It compliments the first story, while at the same time creating something new and all it's own. While it has many references to the first book, it's one that can also be read as a stand alone, though I'd recommend reading both books.

If you're a fan of fairytale retellings, pick up this book. Trust me, it's not the fairytale you grew up being told, and it's not going to end the way you think it will. It's definitely a fairytale that will leave you wanting more, and will make you eager to learn which retelling Johnston will be writing next.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

E.K. Johnston had several jobs and one vocation before she became a published writer. If she’s learned anything, it’s that things turn out weird sometimes, and there’s not a lot you can do about it. Well, that and how to muscle through awkward fanfic because it’s about a pairing she likes.

You can follow Kate on Twitter (@ek_johnston) to learn more about Alderaanian political theory than you really need to know, on Tumblr (ekjohnston) if you’re just here for the pretty pictures, or online at ekjohnston.ca.
