Shadowhunters TV Series, S2 E6: The Iron Sisters / Review #shadowhunters

From Freeform's Shadowhunters webpage
Let's just use Freeform's summary for the episode as an intro, shall we?

Clary and Isabelle go to The Citadel for answers.

EMMALY'S REVIEW

I think the Iron Sisters were cool. I'm happy how they were perforated and that they showed how they were badass warriors.

I also like the story line with Clary creating runes. I'm glad they kept that as a key part of her story, and that although subtle now will hopefully unfold to be major as it does in the books.

We got a little more weirdness between Clary and Jace, if only a little bit. I'm wondering if we should probably get a little more emphasis on them being brother and sister, a story line that seems to be skimmed over a little. Maybe more to come?

I still can't see why they killed Jocelyn. What help has it given to the story, that a main character alive through the whole book series is killed off now? It so looks like the actor bailed more than the character needed to die. Good luck Maxim (p.s.  I did like Lena Headey better in this role).

Um no more Yin-Fen Izzy, we know what happens to addicts (sniff sniff). A blind man can see that this is going to end badly.

It's good we finally know Clary is clear of demonic blood. And see Izzy you need to stay away from the Yin-Fen.

Does Aldertree really need to be such a pain? I know the Clave are still doubting Jace but he is going a bit far for me and becoming unbelievable.

The awkwardness between Alec and Magnus is cute. Alec don't ask the "how many before me" question, that's just going to get you into trouble! Good to see their relationship isn't straightforward and easy from the start. We still love that we get to see this on screen.

Good to see Maia and Simon together and hearing a bit of her back story, and the bad things about adapting to be Downworlders.

It's nice to see Simon negotiating with Luke in werewolf form. I know I've said it before but Simon is one of the only characters in the show that is close to the book.

Was it just me or was the reunion between Clary and Luke not that huge. Her mum died, he is basically her step dad and has been missing and he gets a basic hug. I would have thrown myself at him. Again makes Clary's character flat and one dimensional.

Overall, the one word I can think of to describe this episode is flat. A lot is going on that involves a lot of emotion but we just don't see it. These characters are meant to be going through Hell, and Clary is sitting on he bed saying how she misses her Mum, like she dies 3yrs ago not 3 days. I feel like it was being criticised for having too much overacting and now it's falling short.

SOPHIE'S REVIEW

Remember last week? We had glimpses of the book characters? Yeah. Well, that was fun. But, this week brings us another episode and sadly, an uneven approach to the unraveling of the mess that Season 1 created.

We start off the episode by going to visit The Adamant Citadel. The home of the Iron Sisters, forgers of weapons and fierce warriors in their own right. Was anyone else praying that we wouldn't see Tessa? Me, too. Please, please, please, DO NOT TOUCH Infernal Devices. Just keep going and try to unfurl this hot mess.

I loved that Izzy and Clary were trying to find answers from the Iron Sisters, but WHO THE H IS SISTER CLEOPHAS? Were you all thinking NOT TESSA like I was?!? Okay, I realize I'm obsessed with ID, and no, I'm never going to get over the worry.

Where are we in this episode? Luke's missing. Clary has visions of runes. She and Jace are still being busted by Izzy for looking so cute together. Yes, I paused the epi, because LOOK! It's Clace! So adorably wrong that it's right.

Strung-Out Izzy has a bad time in the purification, baptismal-style water trial that both she and Clary have to go through to enter the Citadel. Our fave yin-fen addict fails miserably and is warned by a Sister that yin-fen is bad news. Heed the warning and stop getting more from BreakingBadAldertree. Oh, and yin-fen is made from vampire venom. Yeah. Here I thought it was a heroin-like addictive substance. Thank goodness for the Citadel's purity trial. Of course, Clary doesn't ask what's up when her bestie nearly drowns in blackish swirls of demonic impurities. Katie, heads up, I may do the same for you one day. ;) Walk away, Clary, while you can.

In the mean time, Simon and Maia are bonding over looking for Luke, whom they find about to make a tasty meal of some campers. You see in Freeform's Shadowhunters world, when werewolves experience a bad loss, they eat campers. Look up at Clary and Jace's expressions in the above still and yeah, they mirror my own right now. But, don't worry. We have SuperVampSimon to the rescue. He will use his new ability to, what was it, compel (?!?!) Luke to stop. Yelling "Bad Dog!" (a nod to Rachel Hawkins' Hex Hall) may have had the same effect. The special effects were cool, but somehow I kept remembering the Twilight wolf pack and how they would've ripped apart Simon. Oh wait, I was helped along by this image of WolfishLuke in a deer's eye. Edward, where are you, when we need you the most?

Look, Edward, you can see Jacob, I mean Luke, in the deer's eye.

I actually watched this episode four times trying desperately to capture a critical overview. I keep coming back to this -- there's a lot to unravel, but don't forget the main plot with Valentine. I think Freeform (which I realize is really Constantin Films) has gotten bogged down with side-plots. Keep your eyes on the prize. Stop introducing new characters only to have them revealed as shapeshifters or shapeshift-runed. Use the characters from the books as they were written. There is so much there to play with in the source material especially for a 42 minute episode.

Let me leave you with the very best part of episode 6:

This date felt so real. It had the worry of Alec's inexperience and the vagueness of Magnus' vast experience. It had cocktails versus beer. It had youth versus age. It had everything lovely that we would expect in a Malec date. Bravo Freeform. You got this part right. Also, bravo to the actors, who were bookishly perfect and raw in their sweet emotions towards each other.

Also, Jace cleaning weapons in the Weapons Room and his rage towards Aldertree at the assignment was all sorts of awesome. Especially if Aldertree is Sebastian. Angry, righteous Jace is my very favorite Jace of all. Unless, it's Great Pancake Jace from Lady Midnight. But, that's hopefully a story Freeform will never touch.

Are you guys still watching Season 2? What are your thoughts?

Snippet from Lord of Shadows - unexpected alliances…

Lord of Shadows
Kieran muttered something under his breath and said, “I will swear loyalty to Mark. I will do as he bids me do, and follow the Nephilim for his sake. And I shall argue with Prince Adaon for your cause, though it is his choice in the end.”
Something flickered in Julian’s eyes. “No,” he said. “You will not do this for Mark.”
Mark looked at his brother, startled; Kieran’s expression tensed. “Why not Mark?”
“Love complicates things,” said Julian. “An oath should be free of entanglements.”
Kieran looked as if he might explode. His hair had gone com- pletely black. With an angry look at Julian, he strode toward the Shadowhunters—and knelt in front of Cristina.
Everyone looked surprised, none more than Cristina. Kieran tossed his dark hair back and looked up at her, a challenge in his eyes. “I swear fealty to you, Lady of Roses.”

We need to know WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!?!?! Lord of Shadows will be out on May 23rd. Which feels like an incredibly long time to wait. Especially since we're rather in impatient when it comes to waiting to read this book.
